Irish brown soda bread an easy way to taste a bit of Irish cuisine. This yeast-free bread is perfect for beginner bakers and busy families!

- Loaf tin
- Large mixing bowl
- Measuring jug
- Wire rack
Ingredients

- 150 g (5 1/2 oz) self-raising flour
- 275 g (9 3/4 oz) whole grain flour
- 2 tbsp of wheat germ
- 2 tbsp of wheat bran
- 3 tbsp of brown sugar
- 1 generous tsp of bicarbonate of soda
- 1 tbsp salt
- 400 ml (14 fl oz) buttermilk
- 1 free-range egg
Preparation Method

- Preheat the oven to 175˚C/Gas Mark 4. Grease and flour a loaf tin.
- Combine all dry ingredients in large mixing bowl.
- In measuring jug mix well butter milk with egg.
- Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients, and pour into the wet mixture. Using a large wooden spoon, bring the mix together.
- Put the dough in a pre-prepared loaf tin.
- Sprinkle the top of the dough with cold water and use a knife to make the cut to the bottom of the loaf tin.
- Place the bread in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
- The bread is ready when you can turn it out on a wire rack, and when the bottom is tapped, it should sound hollow.
- Allow bread to cool down before serving.
