Irish brown soda bread

Irish brown soda bread an easy way to taste a bit of Irish cuisine. This yeast-free bread is perfect for beginner bakers and busy families!

You will need

  • Loaf tin
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Measuring jug
  • Wire rack

Ingredients

Serves 8
  • 150 g (5 1/2 oz) self-raising flour
  • 275 g (9 3/4 oz) whole grain flour
  • 2 tbsp of wheat germ
  • 2 tbsp of wheat bran
  • 3 tbsp of brown sugar
  • 1 generous tsp of bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 400 ml (14 fl oz) buttermilk
  • 1 free-range egg

Preparation Method

65 minutes
  1. Preheat the oven to 175˚C/Gas Mark 4. Grease and flour a loaf tin.
  2. Combine all dry ingredients in large mixing bowl.
  3. In measuring jug mix well butter milk with egg.
  4. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients, and pour into the wet mixture. Using a large wooden spoon, bring the mix together.
  5. Put the dough in a pre-prepared loaf tin.
  6. Sprinkle the top of the dough with cold water and use a knife to make the cut to the bottom of the loaf tin.
  7. Place the bread in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
  8. The bread is ready when you can turn it out on a wire rack, and when the bottom is tapped, it should sound hollow.
  9. Allow bread to cool down before serving.
